an unexpected gift

Almost every day Rondel asks me if we can go to the park, and I usually try to make it happen. It’s hard to top a pile of dirt and a lake, though, no matter how many slides and swings there are!

It’s not always easy to find less structured areas to play in the city, but I love it when we do! There’s something so elemental about dirt, rocks, and water – about sliding down dirt banks, climbing over boulders, throwing dirt clods as far as possible, and watching the splashes and ripples emanating out over the surface of the water. The construction at this lake is only temporary, unfortunately, but we’re taking advantage of it while we can! And it reminds me that even in the middle of the urban sprawl there are places where my little boys can be explorers, adventurers, and just kids without adult expectations or constraints.
